Community College to University: The real Story

Thinking about transferring from a community college to a university? You're not alone! Many students dream of making the transition, but it’s not always as simple as two years and done.

Karina, a student who transferred from Sacramento City College to Sacramento State, shares her journey. She took four years to complete community college because she worked full-time and needed extra time for math courses. Once she transferred, she completed her degree in just two and a half years—even adding a minor!

One of the biggest shocks for transfer students? The shift in support systems. At community college, Karina had trusted counselors and a strong support network. At university, she had to figure out much of it on her own.

Cost is another major factor. Community college was practically free for Karina thanks to grants, but at university, she had to pay over $1,000 per semester, plus books and parking fees.

Her biggest advice? Be proactive, ask questions, and prepare financially. Transferring is possible, and your community college experience can set you up for success!
